A Wedding Cake Artist’s Guide to the Best Rutland Wedding Venues

I count myself very lucky to live and work in the beautiful Rutland countryside. England’s smallest county is known for Rutland Water, its charming villages, and even the “Rutland dinosaur” that was discovered a few years ago. After living here for over 16 years, I’ve had the pleasure of working as a wedding cake artist at nearly every wedding venue in Rutland, and believe me, there are plenty to choose from!

As a wedding cake designer, I often arrive early to set up the cake, giving me a behind-the-scenes look at each venue. I get to know the coordinators and staff and see first-hand how each Rutland wedding venue treats not only its couples but also its suppliers.

With that in mind, I’ve rounded up some of my favourite wedding venues in Rutland, perfect for inspiration if you’re planning your own special day. I’m proud to be a Recommended Supplier at several of these stunning locations, and I’d love to share a little glimpse inside.

Starting strong with a true Rutland classic, The Barnsdale has recently undergone an incredible renovation. The Barn has been transformed into a stunning, modern-rustic space with beautiful lighting and a seamless indoor-outdoor feel. The walls are mostly neutral, meaning any style of wedding cake — from elegant tiers to rustic buttercream — will look perfect here.

Just across the road from The Barnsdale, Rutland Hall Hotel is a sprawling estate overlooking Rutland Water. It features luxurious accommodation, a leisure centre (you’ll often find me there at the gym!), and two beautiful locations for your Rutland wedding.

The Lakeside Suite offers breathtaking views of Rutland Water, with an option for an outdoor ceremony that’s truly unforgettable. For larger celebrations, the Pavilion seats up to 450 guests — a perfect blank canvas for your unique wedding style. Both settings work beautifully with statement wedding cakes, and coordinator Emmie ensures every detail runs smoothly.

A true hidden gem, Barnsdale Gardens is one of Rutland’s most enchanting outdoor wedding venues. Founded by Geoff Hamilton as the original filming location of BBC Gardener’s World, it’s now home to over 30 small, themed gardens.

This is a marquee or tipi-style venue, giving you complete creative freedom — from your caterers to your florists and, of course, your wedding cake design. For a relaxed summer Rutland wedding, Barnsdale Gardens is simply perfect.

One of the newer additions to the Rutland wedding scene, Haybales Farm is ideal for couples dreaming of a rustic, laid-back celebration. Located on a working arable farm, it offers a blank canvas where you can truly make the space your own.

I always recommend leaning into the relaxed countryside vibe here with semi-naked wedding cakes, dessert tables, and natural styling complementing the setting beautifully. It’s like hosting the best garden party ever, surrounded by the Rutland countryside.

In the heart of Uppingham’s beautiful market square, The Falcon Hotel offers timeless elegance and cosy charm. Think roaring fires, oak-panelled rooms, and a gorgeous courtyard garden for summer celebrations.

Lily and her team are wonderful, ensuring your Rutland wedding runs seamlessly. Whether you’re planning an intimate winter gathering or a grand summer event, The Falcon is a fantastic choice, and it makes the perfect backdrop for a classic, elegant wedding cake.

Set on the shores of Rutland Water, Normanton Park Gardens offers one of the most stunning backdrops for any Rutland wedding. This marquee venue combines luxury with family-run warmth, as the owners live on-site and are personally involved in every wedding.

The accommodation has been beautifully renovated, making it ideal for a weekend-long celebration. Every time I work here, I feel like part of the story that makes this venue so unique.

Finally, I have to mention Normanton Church, Rutland’s most iconic wedding ceremony location. While it doesn’t host receptions (so I’ve never had the pleasure of setting up a wedding cake there), it remains one of the most romantic places in England to say “I do.”

Saved from demolition during the creation of Rutland Water, the church now stands partly submerged, creating an unforgettable setting for your vows and your wedding photos.
